Umbelditta Letter Atelier began as a working table for commissions and grew into a teaching studio for adults who want calligraphy without spectacle. We keep the rooms quiet, the tools honest, and the instruction paced for people who already live full weeks—designers, writers, archivists, and anyone drawn to the physical act of making letters.

From commission desk to atelier
Early work at Umbelditta Letter Atelier was almost entirely invitation and envelope lettering for Bologna celebrations. Clients asked how to learn the same strokes. Rather than point them at video loops alone, we opened evening seats with proper nibs, paper, and critique. The atelier name stuck because the space feels closer to a craft room than a storefront classroom.
Today we balance teaching with studio commissions. That dual rhythm matters: students see work in progress drying nearby, and clients benefit from instructors who still write under deadline.

How we teach
Instruction at Umbelditta Letter Atelier favors demonstration, then supervised practice, then quiet repetition. We annotate margins in pencil, photograph progress only when you ask, and never grade adults like schoolchildren. Mistakes are material: a heavy shade teaches as much as a perfect hairline.
We teach in English and Italian. Guests often mix languages mid-sentence while discussing slant—perfectly welcome here. Our scripts overview and workshop formats explain the practical paths available.
