Umbelditta Letter Atelier

Ink that remembers the hand

Umbelditta Letter Atelier is a quiet calligraphy and lettering studio for adults on Via San Felice in Bologna. We teach pointed-pen and broad-edge scripts, host small workshops, and take commissions for invitations, envelopes, and signed pieces that feel made by a person—not a printer preset.

If you have ever paused over a flourished capital or the weight of a carefully placed downstroke, you already know why Umbelditta Letter Atelier exists. Here the work is slow on purpose: ruling lines, mixing ink, listening to the nib, and building muscle memory that outlasts a weekend hobby kit. Our tables face soft daylight; our shelves hold bottles, blotters, and practice sheets rather than retail clutter.

Whether you arrive as a beginner who has never held a dip pen or as a designer looking to deepen lettering craft, Umbelditta Letter Atelier keeps classes adult-paced, conversational, and rooted in traditional technique with room for contemporary flourish.

Ink, nibs, and the first honest line

Every session at Umbelditta Letter Atelier begins with materials you can trust. We introduce pointed nibs that flex with pressure, broad-edge tools for book hands, and inks that dry with character—walnut, iron gall–style blacks, and pigmented teals for flourish studies. You learn how paper tooth catches the stroke, why blotting matters, and how to clean a nib so tomorrow’s line still sings.

We do not rush past drills. Ovals, hairlines, and thick-thin transitions are the grammar of copperplate and modern pointed pen. Guests leave with muscle notes written into the wrist, not just a pretty sample to photograph and forget.

Scripts taught with patience

Umbelditta Letter Atelier focuses on copperplate foundations, italic book hand, and contemporary brush lettering for adults who want clarity more than trends. Our scripts page outlines what each path asks of you—slant, spacing, and the quiet discipline of consistent ovals.

Commissions stay in the same spirit: wedding suites, place cards, and envelope calligraphy that honor the names they carry. We discuss paper stock, ink permanence, and mailing constraints before the first downstroke.

Studio rhythm on Via San Felice

The atelier opens Tuesday through Saturday, ten to seven. Midweek evenings suit working adults; Saturday mornings fill with workshop cohorts of eight to ten seats. Tables arrive ruled and stocked—ink pots, holders, pads—so you can sit down and write.

Between classes, Umbelditta Letter Atelier is a working studio: envelopes drying on racks, practice sheets annotated in pencil, tools laid out for the next guest. Visit our workshops page for formats, or read about how the studio grew in Bologna’s letter culture.
